Teltonika Racing team is ramping up its final preparations ahead of Dakar 2022 Rally. And we are happy to share the news on how our Asset Tracker Easy (TAT100) helped the team’s equipment safely reach its final destination.
Risk management is one of the business-critical aspects that is being taken into account when dealing with valuable assets. According to the recent Annual Cargo Theft Report, the dominant risks were from hijacking and theft from or of vehicles, accounting for 78% of the total losses reported. Thefts of vehicles or their pricey and essential parts have been a recurring issue in recent years due to the economic downturn by the pandemic. For example, in the USA, vehicle thefts jumped 9% last year from 2019.
Thus, theft prevention in transporting valuable rally equipment also requires more attention and a different approach. Thanks to the solution by Teltonika Mobility, safety and transportation of the goods can be ensured in a cost-effective and convenient way of GPS tracking.
HOW THE SOLUTION WAS IMPLEMENTED?
The transportation of Teltonika Dakar Racing vehicles has begun already in November. Ahead of the journey from Vilnius (Lithuania), one TAT100 device was mounted in an RV trailer carrying the equipment for the race, while the other was placed inside the X-Raid MINI racing car. Each tracker was programmed to send periodic notifications every 3 or 6 hours, respectively.
It should be noted that satellite tracking can be expensive with acquisition costs going up to 600 EUR to 1500 EUR per device, while monthly expenses could add up to 250 EUR. With our cost-efficient and GPS-based solution, these costs can be fully avoided. Our integrated asset trackers had been regularly transmitting the location of the vehicles as they were transported to the ports of Kiel (Germany), also while travelling via ground to the port of Marseille (France) and via ship to Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). It is important to mention that tracking continued even when the race equipment have been travelling through the Medditterian Sea, where TAT100 was communicating with towers on the ground while passing by the nearby islands.
Below are the map views of TAT100 tracking with periodic notification every 3h and every 6h respectively.
Asset Trackers have not only enabled the location monitoring of a racing car but also ensured its safety. In case of unauthorized or irregular movement detected in the RV or a car, an alarm signal would be sent to the online platform or authorities.
In the course of Dakar 2022, Teltonika Mobility trackers will be instrumental in monitoring the RV’s whereabouts and, at the same time, protecting valuable assets in bivouacs and other locations.
Comment from Gediminas Mikalainis, Chief Marketing Officer at Teltonika Mobility:
“The racing car has crossed six countries, and, in each of them, it has been accurately monitored. Thanks to our partners Truphone, the connectivity is provided with a single SIM card that works in Europe and Middle East countries. As this service is already installed in TAT100, our clients do not have problems when their assets are crossing countries with different cellular operators.
In terms of monitoring the racing equipment, two maps symbolize different configurations. One tracker has been sending records every 6 hours, while the frequency of the other tracker amounted to 3 hours. Hence, the difference in the accurateness path of the assets. We wanted to show that one can have a choice in selecting their tracking preferences. however, it should be taken into account that battery life depends on the frequency of records“.
